EVER-CHANGING VIEWS

THINGS TO DO

For the hillwalker there are 22 Munros in the area along with many other smaller, but no less awesome, hills.

For the rambler the choice is extensive, ranging from gentle strolls along the lochside accompanied by the sounds of lapping waves, to hiking through deserted glens, up to hilltop lochans, alongside babbling burns and cascading waterfalls.

Being three miles from the A87 means a lot of the northwest highlands and islands are within reach. For those wishing to tour by car the choice is vast.

Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, is a short drive away and is well worth a visit.

The Iron Age brochs of Glenelg are fascinating and thought-provoking, and are situated in a delightful small glen - a must.

There  are boat trips galore within easy reach from Saraig from seal-spotting to glass-bottomed boat trips. At certain times of the year there are evem whalewatching trips.

Fishing is permitted on Loch Duich which is a sea loch.

Horseriding is available nearby (a couple of miles away) plus horse and carriage rides.

The Isle of Skye Bridge is about 17 miles away which makes this famous island easily accessible.
The hauntingly beautiful Scottish mountains and lochs are ever-changing. Colours, light and atmospheric conditions alter from minute to minute creating beautiful vistas from moody and misty to bright and colourful, glistening in the unique Scottish light.

LOCAL WILDLIFE

Loch Duich is home to all manner of wildlife from protected coral reefs to visiting seals and porpoises. Many herons live on its shores along with the elusive otter.

Ratagan Forest is home to deer, badgers, bats and pine martens to name the most frequently spotted. The pine martens, although still wild, do visit frequently and will happily sit on the window-ledges munching peanut butter sandwiches. The badgers are less easy to spot but are regular visitors and have often been seen by guests.

THE COTTAGE

Saraig is an ex-forester's cottage which was built 100 years ago when Ratagan Forest was planted. It is surprisingly large and spacious yet manages to be cosy and welcoming with a wood-burning stove at its heart. Despite having the comforts of modern living, it still retains an air of history. Standing at the front gate on a windy night with the choppy waters of the loch lit up in the moonlight and the forest rustling behind, it is easy to imagine oneself in a bygone era.
